There are many different paths you can take in order to use your talent, and getting a graphic design degree is just one such degree you can study for.

What you need to know

Going into graphic design takes a lot of talent. It is said that in order to be a good artist you need to have a large percentage or raw talent. If you did a bit of research you will find that people in the arts and crafts sector have 80 percent raw talent, with some of them not even having a degree in anything. What these people do not know is that if you want to get far with your talent you have to know how to use it. This is what you will learn in your degree.

Getting a degree is more than just knowing how to be a graphic designer, or how to be an artist. If you have raw talent, you can draw, paint, and make a basket or whatever. You do not have a problem in that department, it is knowing how to put that knowledge to good use that makes a different and that determines whether you will fail or succeed in your career as a graphic designer.

If you know how to draw or paint it is great doing things on canvas, but if you want to take your talent to the next level you will need to know how to use a few computer programs in order to insert what you know into digital form. You want your work to be digital because you want to make it available for use in application like Birthday cards, greeting cards and the like.

There are many places a graphic designer can use his or her talent, greeting cards – as mentioned above - only being one of them. You could also go into poster design, or flyer design so that you can create arty looking marketing tools for clients in Event, concerts and many more. There is also web design, where a web developer will need graphic made for a design he is thinking of.

Remember

Having raw talent is the most important thing when it comes to any career in arts, but raw talent is not enough – you still do need that tertiary education to round it all off.
