Paralegal Career

If you have an interest in the legal system, then a job as a paralegal could be the perfect career for you. With a paralegal career, you will work with attorneys, learn about the law, interview clients, perform legal research, and much more; however, you must have a background within the legal capacity in order to be able to obtain a job such as this.

Plenty of Legal Jobs for Non-Lawyers

Employers look for a wide variety of different skills that are required of anyone who performs the job as one of their paralegals. Obviously, research skills are at the top of the list. Computer skills are also necessary. As a paralegal, you will also be required to perform general office duties, set up appointments, and make travel arrangements. You will be the direct assistant of an attorney.

Your future in the paralegal career can take a variety of different paths. You can specialize in different areas, based upon your education and expertise. You can become a paralegal in the litigation division, real estate, corporate, and criminal law. There are also several other specializations that are not mentioned here.

In order to become a paralegal, you must have a college education focused on the paralegal requirements for your state. In most cases, there is a certification that you must pass in order to be considered a professional paralegal. In some cases, the employer will train their own paralegals, if you are lucky enough to find one of these jobs. I wouldn’t count of this because of the high competition that is in the job market today. You need something that is going to help you to “stand out” against all of the other applicants. In this case, an education/certification could help you to do that.

You can find programs from the following associations where you can help improve your education and certification in the paralegal career field: National Association of Legal Assistants, American Alliance of Certified Paralegals, and the National Federation of Paralegal Association. If you are looking to obtain a certification or to further your knowledge, then definitely check into one of these associations. They too, can help you to “stand out”.

The Future is Bright

The paralegal career is an interesting and rewarding career that can offer you some major opportunities; however, you have to be interested in the law in order to enjoy it the way that someone should enjoy their career.
